Our Story

At World Tree Permaculture, our journey began with a simple yet profound realization: the way we grow food, build economies, and interact with our environment is deeply interconnected. By transforming how we engage with the land, we can create stronger, more resilient communities while restoring the health of our planet.

Roots of an Idea

The Coal Region of Pennsylvania has long faced economic hardship, environmental degradation, and the decline of traditional family farms. Once a booming hub of industry, the area now struggles with job loss, soil depletion, and a food system dominated by industrial agriculture. Small farms are disappearing, replaced by large-scale operations that prioritize profit over people and the planet.

The seed for World Tree Permaculture was planted through years of hands-on experience in agriculture, sustainability, and community building. Our founder, Zack Scheib, grew up with a deep appreciation for nature and a passion for finding solutions that benefit both people and the environment. Seeing firsthand the struggles of small farmers, food insecurity, and environmental degradation, he knew there had to be a better way—one that worked with nature rather than against it.

Zack’s vision found a kindred spirit in Quin Hudon, his co-founder. The two first met while working at a chain restaurant—Zack as a server and Quin as the general manager. They quickly connected over their shared desire to live lives of purpose, beyond the corporate grind. Conversations about sustainability, food systems, and community resilience eventually turned into a plan to create real change. Their combined skills in management, agriculture, and education laid the foundation for World Tree Permaculture.

Both Zack and Quin understand that with the increasingly detrimental effects of climate change and loss of biodiversity, it is more crucial than ever to transition to more sustainable ways of living. This urgency drives every aspect of World Tree Permaculture’s mission and vision.

From Vision to Reality

Our first major step is acquiring a 68-acre farm in Hegins, Pennsylvania, where we will establish a working model of permaculture in action. This farm will be a hub for sustainable food production, education, and local economic development.

To make a real impact, we are building a series of interconnected projects:

  • Nutritional Assistance Program – Providing fresh, locally grown produce to families in need while promoting food security and health.

  • Community-Supported Mercantile – A space to sell farm produce and artisan goods, boosting the local economy and supporting small businesses.

  • Farm-to-Table Restaurant – Showcasing seasonal, locally sourced meals to reconnect people with their food sources and encourage sustainable eating habits.

  • Sustainable Textile Company – Producing climate-beneficial wool and handmade textiles, supporting ethical, local production, and promoting slow fashion.

More than a Farm - A Movement

World Tree Permaculture is more than just a farm; it’s a movement towards economic independence, environmental responsibility, and a thriving local community. By implementing regenerative agriculture, sustainable business models, and hands-on education, we are proving that taking care of the planet is also taking care of people.

We deeply believe in the words of Indian poet Rabindranath Tagore: "He who plants trees knowing he will never sit beneath their shade has at least begun to understand the meaning of life."
